FX Description: Lost Boys studios created 40 shots for acclaimed Canadian film "The Snow Walker", directed by Charles Martin Smith and starring Barry Pepper.
All of the effects for the film were photo-realistic, including the 40-shot mosquito sequence. We began with Pepper’s face in close up; mosquitoes infest both his face and hand. The CG sequence was created with both 3D mosquitoes and 2D swarm mosquitoes. The 3D mosquitoes were animated using keyframe animation and tracked onto Pepper’s face & hand.
Lost Boys Studios also worked on one of the most poignant scenes in the movie, creating a soft ‘first days of winter’ snowfall on the climactic shot with the tundra backdrop. There were a few greenscreen shots in which fog was created, utilizing a 2D fog method that allowed for realism while still maintaining shorter render times.
We also worked on the climactic shot of transition into ‘winter’ closely with Director Smith. An animated matte painting was added to replace part of the tundra and the entire fuselage of the crashed airplane had been replaced with a matte painting mapped onto geometry and tracked in to the 30 second crane shot |
Synopsis: Based on Farley Mowat's short story "Walk Well My Brother" this sweeping wide-screen drama tells the extraordinary story of two people struggling to survive in the High Arctic.
Set in the summer of 1953, a maverick bush pilot (Pepper) transports a sick Inuit girl back to Yellowknife. Enroute, their small plane crashes, leaving the pair stranded on the rugged tundra to face environmental, personal and social challenges. |
