The studio began with a partnership formed in the spring of 1997 between Vancouverite Mark Benard's company, Solstice Digital Imaging Inc., and Richard Branson's Virgin Digital Studios Ltd. (VDS), headquartered in Los Angeles. Incorporated in 1998, Lost Boys Studios became a part of the VDS group of companies, which included 525 Studios in Santa Monica, Virgin Television Mexico, Rushes Post Production and West One Television.

Lost Boys Studios quickly rose to become one of the world's top boutique Visual Effects and 3D Animation Studios. Lost Boys has gained industry brand recognition synonymous with superior quality and productivity, realized through talent acquisition and technical innovation.

In the spring of 2000, following the spirit of adventure, Benard purchased Virgin's shares giving him the control he required to follow emerging opportunities.

In addition to winning numerous international creative awards and receiving an Emmy Nomination for Visual Effects, Lost Boys Studios was ranked Number 10 out of 500 in Business in Vancouver magazine's "BC's Fastest Growing Companies", and ranked as a Number 3 Finalist in the 2002 BC Export Awards.

Promoting diversification and future company growth, the company recently branched out into film project development and production, specifically animation and digital effects related projects, through subsidiary company Lost Boys Entertainment.
